Citrus aurantium, or Bitter Orange, may have originated in Southeast Asia and then carried by traders and travellers to the Middle East and on to the Mediterranean. In Europe, it was most successfully cultivated in Seville, and thus the common name for the fruit is Seville Orange. Across the globe, the Bitter Orange tree’s bark, twigs, fruit juice, and flowers were folk medicine heroes, calming troubled tummies, boosting wellbeing, and toning the skin.
Our Orange Petitgrain Essential Oil, also known as petitgrain bigarad, is distilled from the same citrus species as our Neroli Essential Oil, which is crafted from the tree’s fragrant, white flowers. It hails from Italy and smells dryer and more floral than our Petitgrain Essential Oil that is distilled from the sweet Citrus deliciosa tree grown in Paraguay.
The aromatic green twigs, glossy, green aromatic leaves, and the thick peels from the sour, golden-yellow fruits of bitter orange brim with aromatic essences that are released when gently steamed. The delightfully dry, leafy fragrance with happy herbaceous and floral notes emanates from this pale-yellow liquid that is versatile in skin care, perfumery, and aromatherapy. It has an amazing affinity for the skin as a well-rounded tonic. It beautifully balances oil production and cleanses and clears blemishes. The uplifting aroma is a pleasant panacea for low mood, tension-bound temples, environmental sensitivities, taut nerves, and cloudy breathing.“The petitgrain fragrance is fresh, flowery, revitalizing—slightly resembling neroli. Almost every cologne water contains petitgrain oil. Petitgrain stimulates the mind, gladdens the heart, and tends to be relaxed and balancing.” ~Suzanne Fischer-Rizzi, Complete Aromatherapy Handbook
